THE FINAL TEMPLE
God’s love is unconditional.
God’s holiness is a consuming fire.
Jeremiah stood at the entrance to the Temple and shouted,
“Do not trust in these deceptive words: `This is the temple of the LORD, the temple of the LORD, the temple of the LORD.’”
Jeremiah 7:4
The people figured everything was just fine. They were attending the Temple and “practicing their religion”. What more could God want?
“The Lord wants more,” said Jeremiah. But no one listened.
Soon the Temple was a pile of rubble. Jerusalem lay in ruins as the people were hauled away as captives to Babylon.
God’s love is unconditional.
God’s holiness is a consuming fire.
Centuries later, Jesus rode a donkey into Jerusalem, entered the restored Temple, and started overturning the tables of the money-changers. Jesus had a few things to say to the Temple folks.
“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for you traverse sea and land to make a single proselyte, and when he becomes a proselyte, you make him twice as much a child of hell as yourselves.” (Matthew 23:15)
So the Temple folks arranged to have Jesus executed.
Before long this Temple too was a pile of rubble.
God’s love is unconditional.
God’s holiness is a consuming fire.
Today the Temple of God is the Church, where the love of God is to spring forth as a fountain of Living Water. But what happens when this Temple, like those Temples of old, becomes shallow, when the fountain is dry, when warnings of Jesus are no longer heeded?
But you are not to be called rabbi, for you have one teacher, and you are all brethren. And call no man your father on earth, for you have one Father, who is in heaven. Neither be called masters, for you have one master, the Christ. He who is greatest among you shall be your servant; whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted. (Matthew 23:8-12)
Yes, there are deeply committed followers of Jesus all over the earth. There are gatherings of disciples where the Fountain of Living Water flows freely.
But Christendom as a whole (the Temple) stands today under the same judgment as those Temples of old. This Temple, as we have known it all our lives, is soon to become rubble. The Church in all its forms is being weighed in the balance and found wanting.
God’s love is unconditional.
God’s holiness is a consuming fire.
Consuming Fire is visiting the Church. And out of the ashes will rise two new Temples.
One Temple will be a religious monster, ruled by deceit and driven by malice. This Temple is none other than the Harlot of Revelation 17.
But out of the ashes another Temple will rise. This Temple is that motley multitude from every nation, tribe and tongue that will pass through the Great Tribulation and “wash their robes and make them white in the blood of the Lamb”.
This Temple will be focused on simply doing the Master’s will.
The members of this Temple will be characterized by 5 things:
They will know what it means to be “crucified with Christ.”
They will live and speak the truth.
They will share the Master’s suffering as well as his power.
Their hearts will be ruled by the Father’s unconditional love.
They will respect God’s holiness as a consuming fire.
They will know what it means to be “crucified with Christ.”
I am crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. (Galatians 2:20)
If I’m crucified with Christ, I am dead to my ego, dead to the need for attention, dead to “hurt feelings”, dead to the compulsion to make things go my way.
I am learning daily to back off and let the Lord Jesus lead the way, always paying attention to what he has to say.
I am living by faith in the Son of God who loved me and gave himself for me.
They will live and speak the truth.
In today’s crumbling Temple, Truth has long since been pushed aside in favor of “the end justifies the means”.
But in the Last Temple, Truth will reign supreme.
“You say that I am a king. To this end was I born. For this cause I came into the world: to bear witness to the truth. Whoever is of the truth hears my voice.”
John 18:37
They will share the Master’s suffering as well as his power.
“If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you.
If you were of the world, the world would love its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you.
Remember the word that I said to you, `A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, they will persecute you; if they kept my word, they will keep yours also.”
John 15:18-20
We will not have to look for persecution. It will find us. And the suffering we endure in our obedience to the Master will, in a mystery, be accompanied by his unspeakable power.
“If they kept my word, they will keep yours also.”
Their hearts will be ruled by the Father’s unconditional love.
Unconditional love is not in our nature. We were born of Adam’s race and are prisoners of our egos.
But all that changes when our Lord brings us into God’s World and enables us to walk by God’s Spirit.
Now we can do it. We can walk in love.
“You have heard that it was said, `You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven; for he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.
For if you love those who love you, what reward have you? Do not even the tax collectors do the same?
And if you salute only your brethren, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same?
You, therefore, must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.”
Matthew 5:43-48
We can do it. The Lord’s Spirit can do it in us.
This love which God puts into us is also a holy fire.
They will respect God’s holiness as a consuming fire.
In this Temple everybody knows the meaning of….
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.
In this Temple believers mean what they say, when they pray….
Hallowed be thy Name.
God grant that we may find ourselves in this Temple.
And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Behold, the dwelling of God is with men. He will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself will be with them; he will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning nor crying nor pain any more, for the former things have passed away.”
Revelation 21:3-4
Prayer: Lord we are awed by your unconditional love and your holiness. You are worthy, so worthy of all we have to offer. Refine us so you are on the throne of our hearts, so you alone are our temple. May we heed your warning, listen to your call to leave Babylon. May we live the truth you speak into our hearts. Oh to be one with you in your suffering, in your offering, in your love, to be consumed by it. Dwell with us, dwell with us Oh Holy One. Amen.

THE BRIDE AND THE MONSTER
Anything can happen in a dream. Animals morph into people. A familiar door in your childhood home leads to an unfamiliar city. A lifelong friend turns into a frightening stranger. It all seems perfectly natural in a dream.
Some dreams visit when we are in a deep sleep. Others invade our souls when we’re wide awake. A vision can overwhelm us while we’re simply staring out the window at the rain.
A dream is visiting me now, as I sit here wondering how you and I fit into it.
I see a young woman leaning on a balustrade, looking out over the ocean. No words could do justice to her beauty. Yet impatience is written on her face, for in my dream I know that she is soon to be married. She opens a letter, reads it, folds it, and looks away. Tears fill her eyes.
“How much longer?” she sighs.
The chief village of the small island where she lives is built around a ponderous stone temple. I see the young woman approaching the temple. Three men in long black robes stand at the entrance with their arms akimbo. As she tries to enter, they bar her way.
The young woman turns back, passing through the crooked lanes of the village. Now she stoops to lift a crippled child in her arms, and carries him to a fountain at the end of the lane. Quietly she dips the child’s withered leg in the water, and places him gently on the flagstone path. “Walk, Child,” she commands, and suddenly the boy is leaping and dancing and shouting for joy. A crowd gathers in amazement.
“I want you all to come to my wedding,” says the young woman to the awed gathering. “There will be a place for each of you at the feast.”
But where is the Bridegroom? The wedding cannot begin until he arrives.
In my dream I see the centuries flow by like a river. Still there is no sign of the Bridegroom. From a distance the Bride looks as young as ever. But as she comes closer, I gasp, “This cannot be the Bride!” Deep lines frame her mouth. The softness is gone from her eyes, which are now empty and colorless.
Once again she approaches the temple. This time the three black robed men step aside and bow deeply. The woman enters the Temple as a high priestess, moves slowly up the aisle, climbs five steps and takes her seat on an ornate throne. Before her is an immense stone altar covered with a profusion of jewelry— glistening gold, precious stones, chains, rings, bracelets. She adorns herself with six necklaces, thirteen bracelets, a ring for every finger.
“Are you the Bride who once invited us to your wedding?” I ask. She turns toward me with a face that would frighten Satan. Her eyes are two stagnant pools; her mouth curls into a sneer.
“What do you think?” she replies, and proceeds to sort the jewelry piled on the stone altar. “Where is the Bride? What happened to the Bride?” I demand. In my dream the woman turns toward me again, totally transformed. The jewelry is gone. Her face is young and beautiful. “Have you been looking for me?” she asks in a cheerful voice, clear as a mountain spring.
It appears that two women inhabit the same body.
One is young, pure, and clothed in kindness.
The other is hard, treacherous, cold as ice.
Is the young Bride captive in the body of this Monster?
The village clock strikes twelve noon. The temple begins to fill with people. Now they wait for the jeweled priestess to begin her rituals as the three men in black move slowly up the aisle and kneel before her. Suddenly the priestess begins to writhe in agony. With great effort she lifts her hands in “blessing” as the congregation falls to its knees.
“What happened to the Bride?” I cry. “Where has she gone? You are not Bride!”
The three men robed in black rise from their knees, and approach me with fire in their eyes, when suddenly the priestess begins to tremble violently. She grasps the stone altar, clinging to it with all her strength, breathing heavily, while she surveys the congregation with those vacant eyes. Beads of perspiration drop from her forehead. Is she about to give birth? Something within seems to be tearing her apart. “No!” she cries. “No! No! No!”
Now I see something that can only happen in a dream. While the priestess clutches the stone altar, another form emerges from the outline of her body. A young woman exactly her size steps from the shadow of the priestess and descends the stairs. Without a word the young woman walks down the aisle and moves into the sunlight.
A final shudder passes through the body of the priestess. She stands, erect and calm before the astonished congregation. “Now, at last, I am free to grow!” she shouts. Before our eyes the priestess grows larger and larger until her head is ten feet above the tallest person in the temple. “My hour has come. We shall now take possession of this island,” she announces. The three men in black robes fall on faces and the congregation follows their example.
I am seized with terror. Whoever this Monster-Priestess may be, I know I need to flee. I run down the aisle and out into the sunlight.
And there, surrounded by a cluster of joyful people, is the Bride.
“My days of captivity are over,” she says. “I am free from the Monster at last. Follow me beyond the village wall. It’s time to prepare for the arrival of the Bridegroom.”
Where is the Bride?
The instant you were joined to Jesus you became part of his Body.
You became a member of a fellowship created by the living God.
You were united with men and women whose lives are nailed to Christ’s cross—spoiled for the world — and whose hearts are ignited with the resurrection power of God’s Spirit.
This fellowship differs so vastly from what is commonly thought of as “church” that we hesitate to use the word. Yet that’s what Jesus calls it. He calls it “my Church.”
“…On this rock I will build my Church, and the powers of death shall not prevail against it.” (Matthew 16:18)
At present the Bride of Christ is concealed from human eyes, held captive in the body of the Monster.
But soon her captivity will end.
By the time the Bridegroom arrives, the Bride will be magnificent and free.
The Lord Jesus gave himself up to death for her. He sanctified her by the power of his Spirit. He cleansed her “by the washing of water with the word.” And he will present her to himself “in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, holy and without blemish.”
Ephesians 5:25-26
At the Wedding Feast the Bridegroom and the Bride rejoice together.
Then I heard what seemed to be the voice of a great multitude, like the sound of many waters and like the sound of mighty thunder peals, crying, “Hallelujah! For the Lord our God the Almighty reigns. Let us rejoice and exult and give him the glory, for the marriage of the Lamb has come, and his Bride has made herself ready; It was granted her to be clothed with fine linen, bright and pure”— for the fine linen is the righteous deeds of the saints.
Revelation 19:6-8
The Bride has been on the earth since the day of Pentecost. There hasn’t been a day in all the passing centuries when this miraculous fellowship has forgotten to give glory to its Master. Tens of thousands have laid down their lives for him. Numberless martyrs have suffered for his name, joyfully giving testimony to the crucified and risen Lamb.
Yet all through the centuries…this Church has existed as wheat growing among tares.
It has lived inside a monster, a religious system which proclaims Jesus with its mouth, while demeaning him in its heart.
The Bride is the creation of Christ alone. He called her into existence by the power of his Word. He sustains and guides her by the light of his Spirit. She lives under the shadow of his cross. She has been crucified to the world and the world to her.
Her life is hid with Christ in God, so that when Christ, the Bridegroom, appears, she will appear with him in glory.
The Monster, on the other hand, is the creation of man. She is the product of human vanity, always usurping the authority of the One who alone builds his Church.
Too often the Monster is mistaken for the Bride.
The monster claims to be the Bride and strives to appear as the Bride.
But watch how she behaves. Though she is a skilled actress, she cannot help being what she is. You will know her by her fruits.
Since the earliest days of the Church the Bride and the Monster have shared the same body. In our Lord’s warnings to five of the seven churches in Revelation, Chapters 2 and 3 we see the Monster at work, distracting the believers.
“But I have this against you, that you have abandoned the love you had at first.” (Revelation 2:4)
“But I have a few things against you: you have some there who hold the teaching of Balaam, who taught Balak to put a stumbling block before the sons of Israel, that they might eat food sacrificed to idols and practice immorality.” (Revelation 2:4)
“But I have this against you, that you tolerate the woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess and is teaching and beguiling my servants to practice immorality and to eat food sacrificed to idols.” (Revelation 2:20)
“I know your works: you have the name of being alive, and you are dead. Awake, and strengthen what remains and is on the point of death, for I have not found your works perfect in the sight of my God. Remember then what you have received and heard; keep that, and repent.” (Revelation 3: 1b-3a)
“I know your works: you are neither cold nor hot. Would that you were cold or hot! So because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spew you out of my mouth. For you say, I am rich, I have prospered, and I need nothing; not knowing that you are wretched, pitiable, poor, blind and naked. (Revelation 3:15-17)
In these assemblies the Bride and the Monster were both present.
The Bride was preparing herself for the return of her Master.
The Monster was busy distracting believers from their calling….flattering, seducing, causing division.
All through the centuries the struggle has continued. Humble broken hearts draw their strength from the Lord who never fails those who gather in his name. At the same time, religious flesh has been busy building a “church” which bears no resemblance to the One who is meek and lowly of heart.
All human attempts to reform the Church have ended in defeat.
Each divine cleansing in the church has been followed by a rip tide of compromise.
The Monster and the Bride are destined to inhabit the same body until God separates them. We humans have neither the wisdom nor the power to extricate the Bride from the Monster.
But the Monster is now beginning to tremble. She has taken hold of the stone altar with a fierce grip. Her knuckles are white, her face glistens with a fearful sweat. She is in agony. Has the hour of separation come at last?
Only God knows.
But when it happens, it will happen without our help.
It will happen suddenly.
Meanwhile, many of us are having trouble finding our place in his Body of Christ. Jesus we know and love. But his Church is so often a disappointment.
We know that the Church is made up of ordinary people like we are, redeemed sinners still being sanctified.
But something isn’t right!
Where is the integrity?
Where is the sense of the HOLY?
Where is the love?
If we seriously seek his Kingdom, the Lord will guide us to believers whose lives are nailed to the cross, who are seeking to follow the Master through all the confusion.
Jesus is able to sustain us, wherever he chooses to place us in his Body.
Yes, the Professing Church is in crisis.
Judgment has begun at the household of God.
The light which will soon uncover every secret has begun to penetrate the Church.
The Monster is finding it ever more difficult to pose as the Bride.
And the Bride is finding it ever more difficult to function within the Monster.
Stand in awe, and let God do it!
New ministries are forever trying to revive the Church. Time and again the Monster simply reaches out enfolding these ministries in her arms of vanity.
Only God can revive the Church. The Lord alone will set his Bride free.
“Except the Lord build the house, they labor in vain that build it.” (Psalm 127)
While the Monster trembles and writhes in agony, we stand back and let God do what only he can do. God does not need our help to separate the Bride from the Monster.
Signs of Separation
Long before the Church became “official” in the Roman Empire, the Monster was at work building its own kingdom in, through, and around the Church. Side by side with deeply committed servants of the Master were people who came into the Body with another agenda. Listen to Paul, writing to the Church at Rome:
I appeal to you, brethren, to take note of those who create dissensions and difficulties, in opposition to the doctrine which you have been taught; avoid them. For such persons do not serve our Lord Christ, but their own appetites, and by fair and flattering words they deceive the hearts of the simple-minded. (Romans 16:17-18)
The spirit of the Antichrist was already at work enticing believers to put their trust in form, ceremony, observing certain days, avoiding certain foods, pursuing ecstasy for its own sake.
But always in the mercy of God, the Monster was allowed to go only so far before it was restrained.
As the power of the Emperors declined, the political power of the Church increased. By the Eleventh Century the spiritual power of the Church was vastly diminished, but its political power was immense. The Monster seemed to be unstoppable.
Then in 1054 the Church in the East and the Church in the West broke fellowship and became two separate entities. Five centuries later the Reformation brought more divisions, until today the number of church structures is almost beyond counting.
The Bride has been kept humble, and the Monster has become weak, as the outward visible Church remains splintered into denominations, sects, movements, associations, hierarchies.
But now, after inhabiting the same body for centuries, the Bride and the Monster are beginning to disengage. Believers are finding unity with each other across all barriers. Baptists, Roman Catholics, Pentecostals, Lutherans, etc. are discovering that they have a unity with each other around Jesus that is far more important than loyalty to their official brand.
These people are not trying to form a new “church.” They are already “one body in Christ and individually members one of another.” (Romans 12:5) They are satisfied to keep serving the Master wherever he has put them until he is ready to raise up his Bride.
At the same time the Monster is engaged in its own “unity movement” which also crosses denominational barriers. One could say that the Monster is following the agenda of the Antichrist.
The Monster installs its own authority in place of the authority of Jesus’ simple commands.
Ancient church bodies with traditions rooted in the Lordship of Jesus are subtly shifting their theology to accommodate anybody who will help them survive.
Once the Monster is free of the Bride’s restraining power it will begin to market its “gospel” with such effectiveness that Apple and Google will marvel. Then the Monster will begin to grow.
You and I did not choose to be born into this hour of history. But here we are; and there is no way we can avoid the choice we have to make.
Which Church will we be part of?
Will we yield to the Monster, who, behind a mask of unearthly beauty, clothed in a shining robe, will welcome the waning world to her embrace?
Or…
Will we follow Jesus “outside the camp” where he is preparing his Bride for the Wedding Feast?
Prayer: Holy Lord, we ask you to set us, your bride, your church, free from the monster. Open our eyes and hearts when the monster starts to enfold us. Protect us from being deceived, flattered, divided and seduced by the monster. In every way, may we resemble you, meek and lowly of heart, nailed to your cross out of love for you. Keep us united to each other, serving together in that love wherever you have put us. Lord Jesus, ignite us with your spirit and your deep love. Give us the insight, faith, patience and wisdom to continue to seek you outside the camp, clothed for our matrimony, until you, our Magnificent Bridegroom arrive and we enter into your feast with great joy. Amen.

THE GREAT FALLING AWAY AND THE RISING REMNANT
Jesus made it clear:
There will be a falling away.
There will also be those who endure to the end.
Then they will deliver you up to tribulation, and put you to death; and you will be hated by all nations for my name’s sake. And then many will fall away, and betray one another, and hate one another. And many false prophets will arise and lead many astray. And because wickedness is multiplied, most men’s love will grow cold.
Early signs.
The privilege and protection enjoyed for centuries by Christians in much of the world is coming to an end. Soon this protection will be gone.
In place of favored treatment, Christians will be increasingly despised as hypocrites, wimps and frauds.
The minority haters will put Christians at the top of their list.
Many believers will be terrified and melt quietly into the pagan mass.
No longer will there be “a church on every corner.”
The word, “Christian”, will have a different ring.
The name “Jesus” will be jeered as it was on Good Friday.
The “Great Falling Away” will unfold before our eyes.
The remnant.
But while many Christians betray one another and hate one another a remnant will emerge, faithful to Jesus through it all.
But he who endures to the end will be saved. And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached throughout the whole world, as a testimony to all nations; and then the end will come. (Matthew 24)
This remnant will suffer.
It will be despised.
But it will never lose its voice.
It will rise up and proclaim the gospel of the kingdom with such power that the nations will be shaken.
“For behold, the day comes, burning like an oven, when all the arrogant and all evildoers will be stubble; the day that comes shall burn them up, says the LORD of hosts, so that it will leave them neither root nor branch.
But for you who fear my name the sun of righteousness shall rise, with healing in its wings. You shall go forth leaping like calves from the stall.” (Malachi 4)
Jesus’ word to the remnant.
The remnant has been here since the day Jesus sat on the Mount of Olives preparing his disciples for the days ahead.
As he sat on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately, saying, “Tell us, when will this be, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the close of the age?” And Jesus answered them, “Take heed that no one leads you astray. For many will come in my name, saying, `I am the Christ,’ and they will lead many astray. And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars; see that you are not alarmed; for this must take place, but the end is not yet.”
“Take heed that no one leads you astray.”
“See that you are not alarmed, for the end is not yet.”
Don’t panic.
Don’t get carried away by what you see and hear.
Stay focused on the one thing needful: God’s kingdom.
“For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, and there will be famines and earthquakes in various places: all this is but the beginning of the birth-pangs.”
And now, for reasons known only to God, the remnant of deeply committed men and women will be the scapegoat, the target of hatred and blame.
“Then they will deliver you up to tribulation, and put you to death; and you will be hated by all nations for my name’s sake.” (Matthew 24)
The remnant has been living the kingdom life since the day Jesus gave them this counsel.
The remnant is being sustained by the Lord at this instant.
These women and men are focused.
They are walking in the light.
They are ready for whatever happens.
God grant that we may be among them.

Prayer: Yes Lord, may we be among those who endure to the end. Sustain us Lord, sustain us. Sustain us with your loving presence, your tender guidance. Help us not to panic. Help us not to get caught up in the fear of what’s to come. Help us not to give in to the angry voices. Help us not to be deceived. Help us not to be led astray… when we start to wander, when we start to fear, when we start to be misled, call us back. Help us not to grow cold as wickedness is multiplied around us. Keep our hearts warm to you…lit with a fire of passionate love for you, empowering us to live your Kingdom on this earth. And Lord take this remnant that seems so weak and voiceless in the midst of the darkness…and give us voices, give us lives that shake the nations of this broken and dark planet with such force, such power that many will fall before in awe and love. Amen.
STRENGTH WITHIN … FOR WHAT’S NEXT
“….I will put my law within them, and I will write it upon their hearts; and I will be their God and they shall be my people. And no longer shall each man teach his neighbor and each his brother saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest….“
Jeremiah 31
With the election over and the dust settling on a weary nation, millions will be searching looking for meaning amid the absurd events which are disrupting their lives on every level. Political discord and social upheavals batter our weary nation.
Prices out of control
The collapse of the middle class
Bitterness over the lost and broken lives
The trillions wasted on funding wars around the world
People will be searching the Internet, the news, tic toc, You tube, social media to offer solutions…for answers that make sense, that feed the soul.
They will be searching for a “prophecy” which gives them hope.
We have heard considerable talk in religious circles in recent years of what is supposed to be a reliable “prophecy”: that soon there will be a “born-again, Spirit-baptized President” in the White House, who will turn the nation to better things. Some feel that this prophecy has already been fulfilled. Others are looking for further evidence of spiritual power to flow from the White House, either from the man (woman?) who is soon to arrive, or from one of his successors.
Here is a prophecy which won’t be so popular. Time alone will tell which prophecy is correct.
Perhaps in a coming election, a man comes to power in this land who appears to be everybody’s dream. He claims to know God and to be filled with God’s Spirit.
The nation responds with enthusiasm to this President.
“We’ve had enough crime!” says the leader. “Amen!” And amazingly, crime recedes.
“We’ve had enough unemployment!” “Amen'” Imaginative new projects open and soon every one is working.
Patriotism surges. Mass rallies are held from one end of the country to the other, and wherever the President comes to address them, the people cheer and raise their hands in salute. The President goes on weekly television-30 minutes a week–and everything in the land stops while the beloved leader addresses his people.
Everyone is so grateful for this new order, this wonderful sense of national purpose that they fail to notice that every dissenting voice is strangely silenced. A newspaper takes a stand against certain policies of the President. In three days that newspaper is shut down. Midnight arrests begin to occur at the homes of people considered uncooperative.
By the time the nation wakes up to the fact that it has been taken over by a “Democratic Dictatorship,” it’s too late. Secret police are everywhere. Our Saturday and Sunday gatherings are now visited by informers who report every evidence of disloyalty. Speaker after speaker is taken off to jail as inconspicuously as possible.
Farfetched? Unless there is a swift and genuine cleansing of the spirit of this land, such things are inevitable.
And the very ones who should be the salt of the earth to preserve this land from the now-spreading spiritual rot, represent the growing edge of the disease. I’m talking about large numbers of religious folks … “believers” who, without realizing what they’re doing are giving up the control of their minds and spirits to other men, letting their wills be ruled from outside.
It is bad enough that the general populace is letting its values be warped, its sense of reality twisted by the mind-manipulators who sell makeup, mouthwash, cars and beer.
But such things are tame compared to the mass hypnosis which is practiced at those giant gatherings of “believers” which have become so popular.
It doesn’t matter whether it’s thirty thousand in a huge arena or a handful of unstable people playing with spiritual fire in someone’s living room. When the leader tells the people to raise their hands, and every hand goes up, when he commands them to say “Amen” every three minutes during his talk, and they respond, this man is teaching their wills to submit to his command.
Whatever experience they have—spiritual or emotional—is going to be tied to him.
And unless by the grace of God they quickly make the transfer from this leader to Jesus, they will be in bondage for a long time. Perhaps forever.
They are on their way to bondage of mind and soul.
Is it not true that many of us are far more dependent on people around us for our sense of purpose than on the Spirit of God within us?
I don’t operate this way!” you may say. But if you depend on people around you for your strength instead of the Spirit of God within you, your life will be directed from outside by men and women, by your favorite human idol, instead of from the inside by God.
Yes we are to bear one another’s burdens, encourage, exhort, rebuke, speak to one another in psalms, hymns and spiritual songs, and not neglect assembling together. But we are to do these things as people who are being directed from within…. by God’s Spirit.
If your life is directed from within by God, you will never blame your spiritual condition on those around you……
“No wonder I’m dry, I’m not getting fed!
My brothers and sisters don’t love me as they should!
My husband is a slob!”
If you’re dry, it’s because the spring within your heart has been neglected.
Because the gift which is within you has been allowed to stagnate.
And the only one who can get that spring flowing again is you—-by presenting your inner soul, your heart to the only One who is able to touch it with healing. Jesus.
I will put my law within them and I will write it upon their hearts
“…..that according to the wealth of his glory he may grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in the inner person, that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith…..” (Ephesians 3)
Jesus of Nazareth talked to large numbers of people at certain times. He fed five thousand. Who could count the number of healings which occurred as those thirsty multitudes drew near seeking life?
But Jesus made clear that when it comes to following Him, you do it as an individual.
If any man (or woman) thirsts, let him come to me and drink.
If any man (or woman) would come after me, let him deny himself, take up his cross and follow me.
Take my yoke upon you and learn from me…
And when people make the choice of their own free, uncoerced will—-to become His disciples, the Master deals with them as individuals…. Always!
“I am the vine, you are the branches.”
Connection with the divine is an inner thing.
You Pharisees are so careful to clean the outside of the cup and the dish, but inside you are filthy—full of greed and wickedness! Fools! Didn’t God make the inside as well as the outside? So clean the inside by giving gifts to the poor, and you will be clean all over. (Luke 11)
Then if anyone tells you, ‘Look, here is the Messiah,’ or ‘There he is,’ don’t believe it. For false messiahs and false prophets will rise up and perform great signs and wonders so as to deceive, if possible, even God’s chosen ones… (Matthew 24)
Don’t go out into the wilderness or into the secret chambers. Don’t turn to leaders, the media, the Internet.
The God your heart thirsts for is right where you are!
The Spirit who will open your eyes to see your Messiah and know Him afresh… is closer to you than the air you breathe.
And the only one who can open the door of your heart so that He will enter afresh..is you.
no preacher can do it
no evangelist
no spiritual heavy
no exorcist can do it
I pray that according to the wealth of his glory he may grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in the inner person.
The prayer is being prayed for you by believers on both sides of the grave. Nor is there any question about God’s desire to answer that prayer.
But will you let God strengthen you with power by His Spirit in the inner person?
It will never happen as long as we draw all our strength from Brother So-and-So or Sister So-and-So. “Oh, I don’t know how I could make it without Brother So-and-So to show me the way!”
Nor will we ever be strengthened with might by God’s Spirit as long as we sit around blaming other people for our problems.
A blame-filled heart is a prayerless heart.
And a prayerless heart is a barren heart.
Nor will we ever be strengthened with might by God’s Spirit in the inner person as long as we insist on taking things into our own hands.
Aaron took things into his own hands when he made the golden calf. If he had waited on God he would have been given help to deal with the unruly mob.
Saul took things into his own hands when Samuel delayed to come and offer the sacrifices in Gilgal. Saul offered the sacrifices, which he had no authority to do.
When the pressure increases we are always tempted to resort to our old ways, to run to our old unreal escapes.
We need to wait for the only strength which can hold us in the storms…
…the Spirit of God.
And if we stop and turn our hearts to the living God, wait upon Him and ask, the Spirit will come.
He has been promised. There is no such thing as asking and not receiving. Line up your heart with the prayer which the Church in glory now prays for you, “Lord, that I might be strengthened with might by your Spirit in the inner man,” and it will be done.
I pray….. “That Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith”
This prayer is being prayed for you right now. The answer is sent by God to the very door of your heart. Will you say, “Yes”?
Many of us have wanted Jesus as a kind of traveling companion, someone for company along the road.
But to dwell in our hearts?
The only way we will ever know His companionship and His mercy and love is…
…if we let Him dwell in our hearts.
And He will dwell in our hearts only through faith…
If we believe Him.
If we listen to the things He is trying to tell us.
If we trust the things He has already told us.
If we obey Him.
As many as received him, as believed on His name, to them He gave power to become sons of God…..
He who believes in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live…..
This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He has sent.
Countless men and women down through the centuries have said, “Believe in me!” and left behind them a trail of ruined lives. Whole nations have placed their implicit trust into the hands of some unstable man with a swollen ego and a silver tongue.
The only man in all creation who has the right to say, “Believe in me,” is the Lamb who laid down His life for this wayward race. Those who have put their trust in Jesus and not in some warped doctrine or some grandiose dream have remained sound and whole through all storms.
No man can do your believing for you. No angel.
You have to do it for yourself.
The truth you seek is knocking at the door of your inmost heart,
but you have to open the door of your heart and say, “Lord, come in.”
If you do this afresh,
Jesus will indeed come into your heart and be your strength within.
“Now to him who by the power at work within us is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations, for ever and ever. Amen”
And because you have strength within, no storm outside will ever blow you around.
And from within, out of your heart will come rivers of living waters…
…. to bless those around you.
Prayer: Lord, we want to believe only you, we want to listen to only you, we want to trust only you and we want to obey only you. We want living water to flow out of us to bless others. But we have been misled. Jesus, rescue us from the forces we’ve made ourselves vulnerable to…. in the name of our own security, in the quest for power. Instead give us the vision and the desire to draw our strength from within, from what you have given our inner selves. If we don’t have the strength that you offer us, we ask for it now. Be our strength. We open the door of our inmost heart to you, precious Lord. Come in, come in. Amen.
